New GeNotes specialty: Mental health launches today!
The Genomics Education Programme’s new collection of resources will support mental health professionals to leverage the power of genomic testing for their patients
Specialists’ understanding of the way in which genetics impacts our mental health is growing rapidly. Meanwhile, the introduction of the National Genomic Test Directory has opened up genomic testing opportunities. All this change means that psychiatrists and other mental health practitioners need reliable, easily accessible information to support them in making the best of genomic advances for their patients.
Developed by a small specialist group, this new resource for mental health is the 11th specialty to be added to GeNotes and joins other specialties including oncology, paediatrics and nephrology.
What is GeNotes?
GeNotes was developed to meet the genomics education and information needs of medical professionals, before, during and after appointments. All content has been developed by experts for experts.
The website’s content is split into two tiers: ‘In the Clinic’ articles provide information about how to identify where genetics may be relevant and how to navigate genomic testing . They are specifically designed to be used ‘just in time’ – that is, in clinic, at the point of need. ‘Knowledge Hub’ articles, meanwhile, as the name suggests, cover a range of core concepts and principles that support clinicians in building a strong foundational knowledge of genomics and genomic testing, from genetic conditions to technologies and core genomics concepts.
Accuracy of information is paramount. All articles are reviewed annually or bi-annually, depending on the content, and more regularly when necessary – for example to reflect any changes to the test directory.
The evolution of GeNotes
The mental health resource is being launched today to coincide with Mental Health Awareness Week, but the collection will be expanded in the coming months, new specialties will also be added throughout the year.
The programme welcomes approaches from clinicians who are interested in developing specialist resources for GeNotes, both for new specialties and those that are already present. If you are interested, contact us via our webpage.
