Definition

The study of the genomes of individuals and organisms that examines both the coding and non-coding regions. This term is also used when talking about related laboratory and bioinformatic techniques. The study of genomics in humans focuses on areas of the genome associated with health and disease.

Use in clinical context

Genomics is affecting a broad spectrum of healthcare. This includes areas such as rare disease, cancer, pharmacology and infectious disease. Increasing numbers of patients are having genomic testing, both on the NHS and via direct to consumer testing companies.
