Definition

An individual of a species ranging from animals, plants and fungi to single celled bacteria.

Use in clinical context

An organism can be multicellular, such as humans, or single celled such as bacteria. Within healthcare the organism referred to is usually an infectious organism such as bacteria or yeast, but it can be any biological individual, for example a single plant, animal, fungi, bacteria or virus.
