Definition

The fusing of the egg and sperm to create a zygote that will ultimately become a new individual.

Use in clinical context

Fertilisation is an important part of sexual reproduction. Fertilisation brings together half the DNA from the mother with half the DNA from the father ensuring that each individual has the correct amount of DNA, while producing genetically unique offspring.
