Definition

A chain of amino acids.

Use in clinical context

Genes code for chains of amino acids called polypeptides. A protein can be a single polypeptide or several polypeptides. Alterations to a polypeptide can affect the structure and function of the protein. Understanding how alterations impact on the final protein can be important in understanding how genomic variants result in a particular disease or condition and can help devise appropriate treatments.
