New Public Health Masterclass course

We’ve turned our public health event into a video-based course, so you can learn from experts in genomic medicine and gain a completion certificate

The Genomics Education Programme, in partnership with Health Education England’s West Midlands public health workforce team, have launched a new short course, Public Health Masterclass: Genomics in Healthcare.

Expert viewpoints

The course, free to NHS staff and trainees, features a collection of films taken from last year’s Public Health Masterclass, covering:

  • Genomics and the 100,000 Genomes Project – by Genomics England’s Dr Tom Fowler
  • ‘The power and potential of next-generation sequencing – by West Midlands Regional Genetics Laboratory’s Joanne Mason
  • Tackling disease outbreaks – by University of Birmingham’s Professor Nick Loman
  • Non-invasive prenatal testing – by Public Health England’s Annette McHugh
  • Ethic and legal considerations by Wessex Clinical Genetics Service’s Professor Anneke Lucassen

There is an accompanying exercise, which provides learners with the opportunity to reflect on their learning experience and obtain a completion certificate.

Why genomics?

As genomics begins to move from specialist clinics into mainstream patient care, it needs to be considered in every facet of public health: infectious disease; chronic disease; occupational health; environmental health; and maternal and child health.

It is vital, therefore, that public health practitioners have an understanding of the application of genomics across the health service, so they can play their part in bringing the benefits of genomics to patients and the public.

Flexible e-learning

The course is suitable for all public health professionals who would like to learn about the benefits and challenges that genomics will bring to the public health arena. All NHS staff will be able to access the course free of charge through the e-Learning for Healthcare (e-LfH) platform. University staff and students can access e-LfH via Open Athens.

e-LfH is an award-winning e-learning programme providing national quality-assured online training content for the healthcare profession. It is a Health Education England programme working in partnership with the NHS and professional bodies to support patient care by providing e-learning to educate and train the health and social care workforce.
